The Gentle Cycling Company offers single and multi day packages for cycle touring in the Nelson region. Tourism New Zealand has undertaken significant promotion of NZ as a cycling destination and we have seen considerable growth in bookings, particularly from Australians this season. If you haven’t seen the fabulous video of the Great Taste Trail, made by TNZ, check it out here Nelson Great Taste Cycle Trail. The Gentle Cycling Trail’s base in Stoke is the ideal departure point for riding the trail, as they are close to the rural areas beyond Richmond. They offer a door to door shuttle from Chelsea Park Motor Lodge.
Their packaged day rides continue to be a popular option for cyclists wanting to experience the flavours and scenery along the Great Taste Trail . The Rail Route from Stoke to Wakefield is dotted with Great Tastes, so there is a lot to experience in a small area. The Coastal Route to Rabbit Island and Mapua also provides a great day out.
Here is a sample of the tours they offer.
A door to door shuttle from Nelson is included in this ride. Cyclists ride self-guided using a detailed route map, to visit winery cellar doors. There are 5 wineries on this route and not all are open 7 days so we help them select their cycling route before departure. As well as the wineries, Wangapeka Cheese (at The Grape Escape) is also a popular destination and there are plenty of cafes including the McCashins Brewery Café, the Coffee Factory, Café in the Vineyard (Waimea Estates), Grape Escape Café, Fossil Ridge Café, HQ Café in Brightwater and Chateau Rhubarb at Wakefield. More and more vineyards are also offering tasting platters so visitors can enjoy food with their tasting.
A door to door shuttle from Nelson is included in this ride and again, cyclists ride self-guided using our detailed route map. This is a really easy ride (just 7 km) on the trails around Stoke. It includes bookings for tours and tastings at Bays, Lighthouse and McCashins Breweries. It also includes a light lunch at McCashins. With the growing fame of Nelson Craft Brewing Capital, The Gentle Cycling Company are proud to have been the initiators of the first beer bike tour in NZ.
We continue to provide freedom day hire for those who want a simple bike hire option. In addition to our 7 speed and 21 speed bikes, kids bikes, and kiddie trailer, we also now have a Dutch Cargo bike with capacity for two children. This will be a fun way of exploring the flat trails between Stoke and Brightwater.
The itinerary options include 3 day, 4 day, and 5 day trips. Their "All Sorted" package, which includes accommodation and daily luggage transfers, is their most popular package. They have some great accommodation providers along the trail. There is always a dinner venue near the accommodation which usually includes en suite rooms.
